What is room temperature in Kelvin

Conversion of degrees Celsius to Kelvin

Updated on by Stefan Banse

Degrees Celsius with the abbreviation ° C forms a derived international SI unit. Kelvin, on the other hand, is the international base unit of temperature. Kelvin has been the officially defined temperature unit in the international system of units SI (Système international d'unités) since 1968. The temperature measurement in Kelvin is mainly used in science, while in this country in "normal" use Celsius is used for the temperature. It is best to use our "Celsius-Kelvin converter" to convert a temperature from Celsius (° C) to Kelvin (K). Have fun!

Basics for converting Celsius (° C) to Kelvin (K)

The Celsius and Kelvin scales have in common that their scale intervals, i.e. the distance from one degree to the next, are the same. However, the zero point on the Kelvin scale is at absolute zero, i.e. the coldest theoretically possible temperature. This corresponds to minus 273.15 degrees Celsius. Therefore, the Celsius temperature forms the temperature on the Kelvin scale with a numerical value that is 273.15 lower. Thus 0 Kelvin corresponds to a temperature of minus 273.15 degrees Celsius. A temperature of 30 degrees Celsius corresponds to 303.15 Kelvin. The conversion from Celsius to Kelvin is done by shifting 273.15 degrees.

Formula for converting Celsius to Kelvin

For a calculation between Celsius and Kelvin, the conversion formula for the Celsius-Kelvin conversion is now based on the previous derivation:

Conversion formula Celsius to Kelvin
Temperature in K = temperature in ° C + 273.15
