General information about the American black bear

American black bears - also called baribals - are the most common large bears. There are probably twice as many animals of them as of all other species combined, around 800,000!

There are several reasons for this: Black bears, some of which have cinnamon-colored or blond fur, are very adaptable. They eat whatever comes between their thick molars: even carrion or rubbish that tourists leave behind in the national parks. They don't shy away from being close to people. They also give birth to more cubs than any other great bear species.

Black bear habitat

The American black bear lives in the thick forests and scrublands of North America.

Black bear size and weight

The males can be up to 1.90 meters tall and even weigh 225 kilograms. The females are somewhat small and rarely weigh more than 150 kilograms.

What the American black bear eats:

Berries, nuts and shoots taste particularly good for the animals. But fish and small ungulates are also part of the menu.

Offspring among the black bears:

At the beginning of the year, the females give birth to up to six cubs, which they then raise in peace.
