How do I find an MVNO provider

MVNO - Mobile Virtual Network Operator

Because in times of falling profits, the entire value chain from a single source, as is practiced by network operators, is difficult to maintain, the trend towards outsourcing the networks and even network operation has begun. In the search for new business models and in the fight against the loss of margins, the mobile phone providers are establishing more and more brands for special target groups.
The providers operate different strategies. Some are changing into dealers and concentrating on the sale of products from the existing network operators. The others mostly rely on a cheap strategy and become a virtual network operator. Called Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO).

Typical MVNOs are:

  • simyo
  • klarmobil.de
  • simply
  • Tchibo Mobil
  • Blue cellular network
  • ALDI TALK

The MVNOs do not have their own network, but use the infrastructure of a real mobile network operator. In contrast to a reseller, the MVNO markets mobile communications as its own brand with its own tariffs. The MVNO purchases the network capacities required for this from the mobile network operators.
The network operators outsource customer acquisition, marketing and sales to the MVNOs through cooperation. The MVNO draws its services from various sources. He bundles and refines them. He concentrates entirely on the development of products, marketing and sales. The MVNO bundles the content and services in one tariff depending on its target group. The content mostly comes from specialized producers who do not have a distribution channel for their content themselves and still want to be present on the market.
MVNOs not only differentiate themselves through price, but also through the content and services that they combine in their tariffs.

As virtual mobile network operators (MVNO), major brands are trying to occupy new niche markets for their special target groups. For example retailers, media companies, energy providers, insurance companies, fashion brands or automobile manufacturers. There are also many Internet providers who market cell phone tariffs in addition to DSL connections.

Sometimes the MVNO concept bears strange fruits. Smartphones and SIM cards are even sold at petrol stations and in supermarkets. The revenue from the mobile communications business is only a take-away business for the retail companies. There are so many low-cost providers in the cellular market that they regularly compete with each other with cheap prices.
