Healthness: Health becomes holistic
The subjective feeling of health increases more and more into a feeling of happiness. The new goal of overall health is aimed at through active self-optimization: the maximum yield of life energy. The decisive factor is a comprehensive return to the body: its functions and modes of action are reassessed as an integral overall system. In doing so, the individual has increasing responsibility, because the energy that is available to a person will determine even more whether one is "healthy" in the future. A balanced diet, physical fitness, individual precautions, disease prevention, all of this is clearly evident in everyday life. Beer consumption in Germany has been falling for years: in the last 20 years, consumption has fallen from 113.9 million hectoliters to 87.7 million hectoliters.
In return, Germans consume significantly more water. Healthy nutrition has been a long-runner for years: 31 percent of Germans pay attention to healthy eating, 23.6 percent even to a calorie-conscious diet. The former coolness factor of the cigarette has fizzled out: Smoking is now not only considered a health risk par excellence, but is actually frowned upon : The consumption of cigarettes in Germany has halved in the last ten years. In 2005, just over half of Germans were in favor of a smoking ban in restaurants, but now, after the introduction of the non-smoking laws in 2007, it is a matter of course: in 2010, two thirds were in favor of no smoking in restaurants and pubs. However, it is not the laws or campaigns that are decisive for the decline in cigarette consumption, but a heightened awareness and growing sense of responsibility on the part of consumers.
The number of people who take great care of their health has grown step by step in recent years. Twenty years ago, only 24 percent of the German population emphasized that they are very health-conscious; today it is almost 32 percent. 85 percent of Germans are interested in information on healthy eating and living. Almost 33 percent are also willing to accept high costs if it is good for their health. Health is now viewed by all age groups as capital stock that is worth investing in. The success of wellness and organic food shows that health and enjoyment can be marketed profitably, but cannot be simply consumed. This turns health into a private investment - in one's own happiness.
The new healthy architecture
Health is a selling point that works in all industries; it has long since become the preferred consumer good and lifestyle product. The volume of the second health market with the important sectors of wellness, preventive health care and health travel, with around 180 billion euros, has meanwhile already connected to the classic first health market - and its potential is far from being exhausted. In addition to the classic players, other industries will also conquer the changing healthcare market in the coming years.
The healthness trend understands health as an overall system that also increasingly reflects on environmental influences. It is not only important to keep the body healthy, but also the immediate environment. How we design our living spaces has a major impact on our well-being and health. Feng Shui has long been a well-known term. Intelligent, so-called smart furnishings that ensure a healthy, feel-good atmosphere offer the interior industry new opportunities for private four walls. Even companies are increasingly relying on a positive working environment, which is particularly expressed in the design of the rooms. Rooms should correspond to the respective work requirements and situations: stimulate creativity, promote concentration, offer relaxation, encourage communication. Workplaces are becoming “healthy workspaces”.
The growing need of people for a healthy environment is also expressed in a new, healthy architecture in the design of cities. "How can we structurally design our world in such a way that we improve our lives and our bodies?" Asks the New York architecture firm Urban Movement Design, for example. Numerous studies show that a well-structured environment can change people's lifestyles and lead to physical and mental improvement.
