Protein bar test 2021: how healthy are the protein bars really?

Healthy nutrition and fitness often go hand in hand. But for many athletes or amateur athletes, a healthy lifestyle is not enough - they therefore like to use protein bars as a supplement. Fitness bars are currently booming and can be found on almost every supermarket shelf today. In addition to protein powders and protein-rich low-carb products, the protein bars are a supposedly healthy snack, especially in connection with exercise.

Protein bars advertise that they are particularly rich in protein and have significantly fewer calories than unhealthy chocolate bars. The protein snacks are therefore considered a healthy alternative to sweets. But what are the energy bars really good for? We tell you.

What are protein bars?

Protein bars consist of many healthy nutrients, including of course protein. As a handy alternative to protein shakes, they can contribute to a balanced and healthy diet. Athletes in particular, who pay more attention to their protein intake, often resort to small snacks.

Protein bars usually have a low percentage of carbohydrates, which is why they are often eaten as a candy substitute on a low-carb diet. But you should be careful: Many protein bars also contain a large amount of sugar. So it's worth taking a look at the ingredients.

Why are proteins healthy?

Our body needs proteins to function. We need proteins for muscle building, hormonal balance and enzyme production. In addition, a large part of our body is largely made up of proteins. A balanced diet with sufficient protein is therefore useful.

According to the DGE recommendations, no more than two grams of protein should be consumed per kilogram of body weight. 0.8 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight is ideal.

How healthy are protein bars?

In our protein bar test 2021, we not only examined the taste, but also paid attention to the ingredients. Because not every protein snack is as healthy as it is promised in advertising. Nevertheless, most protein bars are healthier than, for example, a classic chocolate bar. These usually consist of 30 to 40% sugar and fat, but healthy protein bars usually only make up 15%. This is of course due to the high protein content that the bar has.

High-quality protein bars also rely on good sources of protein such as whey protein or milk protein. Therefore always check the list of ingredients! But if you, for example, as an athlete would like to consume a higher amount of protein due to muscle building, you are welcome to use a protein bar.

Protein bar test 2021: These protein bars have convinced us

Healthy snacks for in between meals with which you can also build muscle? That is what protein bars promise. In our Protein Bar Test 2021, we examined four variants in more detail and of course also tested their taste. The results of the test can be found below.

# 1: Protein bars from Rawbite

The Rawbite brand offers protein bars in a variety of different flavors. What all products have in common: The ingredients are organic, they are also suitable for vegans and do not contain gluten. We tested the "Apple Cinnamon" variety, which is said to taste similar to grandma's apple pie.

The ingredients list is relatively short, which is great. The protein bar contains only purely natural ingredients:

  • Dried fruits (dried dates, dried apples, raisins)
  • Nuts (almonds, cashews)
  • Cinnamon and vanilla

Sewing values ​​(for 100 g):

  • Energy: 418 kcal
  • Fat: 18 g
  • Carbohydrates (of which sugar): 50 g (50 g)
  • Dietary fiber: 12 g
  • Protein: 9 g

Our conclusion: In terms of taste, the protein bar is very tasty and not too sweet. He can't get hold of grandma's apple pie, but what's up with grandma's apple pie? It's much sweeter. The consistency is slightly sticky and a bit tough. With 50% sugar content (made from natural fructose), however, the bar is less suitable for weight loss. Nevertheless, we find that the snack is a good alternative to conventional chocolate or muesli bars, as it consists of purely natural ingredients and does not contain any additives.

The protein content of just under 10% is relatively low for a protein bar. If you are only looking for a small additional source of protein, you are well advised with the products from Rawbite.

# 2: Protein Bar from HEJ

For our protein bar test 2021, we tested the HEJ Protein Bar in the "Crunchy Brownie" flavor. The healthy protein snacks all contain no added sugar, no collagen, no palm oil and no artificial colors or flavors.

The ingredients list in detail:

  • Sweeteners maltitol and steviol glycosides
  • Glycerin humectant
  • Soy protein
  • Cocoa butter, cocoa mass and low fat cocoa powder

  • Energy: 374 kcal
  • Fat: 16 g
  • Carbohydrates (of which sugar): 38 g (3.6 g)
  • Dietary fiber: 1.4 g
  • Protein: 32 g

Our conclusion: The crunchy brownie protein bar tastes quite sweet and like chocolate. You can also taste the typical protein bar taste. But we don't think that's bad. When you bite into the healthy snack, it feels pleasantly crunchy. In combination with the soft core, the protein bar makes you want more.

With 1.6 g of sugar per bar, it is significantly “healthier” than normal chocolate bars. The protein content is also impressive due to two protein sources: milk protein and soy protein. With just under 14 g of protein per bar, the HEJ snack performed well in our protein bar test 2021.

# 3: Protein Bars from Foodspring

As a third protein bar, we tested the Protein Bar in the "Hazelnut Cream" flavor from foodspring for our Protein Bar Test 2021. The snacks are free from added sugar and artificial flavors.

The ingredients list in detail:

  • Milk protein and whey protein concentrate
  • Isomalto and fructo-oligosaccharide syrup

  • Hazelnut kernels and almond flour
  • Cocoa butter and heavily de-oiled cocoa powder

  • Energy: 331 kcal
  • Fat: 10 g
  • Carbohydrates (of which sugars): 16 g (3.9 g)
  • Dietary fiber: 27 g
  • Protein: 33 g

Our conclusion: In terms of taste, the Hazelnut Cream protein bar from foodspring is not entirely convincing. Although you can taste the hazelnut taste, the sweetness is a bit too dominant for us personally. In addition, the consistency is a bit crumbly and tough.

Convincing, however, are the high protein content and the low calorie content. In our protein bar test 2021, the snack is clearly ahead with 20 g of protein per bar. At just under 60 g, a bar is also very filling and should therefore be eaten after exercise.

# 4 protein bars from MyProtein

The "Vegan Carb Crusher" bar from MyProtein in the chocolate-peanut butter flavor is the last in our protein bar test. He is vegan and advertises to be very low in sugar.

Our conclusion: The “Carb Crusher” protein bar in the “Choc Peanut” variety doesn't taste quite as sweet, but rather tart, like chocolate. The peanut butter taste comes out very subtle, however. Unlike most other protein bars, the consistency is not as tough and firm, but rather light and a bit crumbly. For those who like it crispy, the light crunch in the mouth is very pleasant.

The protein blend makes up a full 31% in the bar. You can taste it and you have to like it. We think, however, that the protein bar is well suited for in-between meals, when you are in the mood for some chocolate but don't want to go for the classic chocolate bar.

Also ingenious: MyProtein also offers protein cookies (shop here *). In terms of taste, we are a little more impressed with the biscuits than with the bars. The cookies also contain a lot of protein, but with almost 300 calories they are also quite high in calories. Trying out is still worthwhile.
