“Amazon Go” - the shop without cash registers. The new business of the US online giant is a challenge for traditional supermarkets.

The internet wholesaler Amazon is venturing into a new business area with the store “Amazon Go”: the retail trade in foodstuffs. The first store with no tills and cashiers opened on Monday in Seattle, Washington state.

Customers can fill their pockets with the goods they want and then simply leave the store without queuing at the checkout counter. This is made possible by sophisticated technology.

In order to be able to enter the store called “Amazon Go”, customers must have an Amazon account and have downloaded the “Amazon Go” app onto their smartphone. You can use the app to open the access lock at the entrance to the shop, but then you can put your smartphone away.

Because inside the 170 square meter store, cameras, sensors and artificial intelligence ensure that the movement of goods is precisely monitored. The products are automatically added to the virtual shopping basket on the customer's Amazon account when they are taken off the shelf. If the customer puts the products back, they automatically disappear from this basket.

At the end of the shopping, the customer can simply walk out of the store. A little later, the purchase is deducted from his Amazon account. The invoice will be sent to you.

Scanning the purchases yourself and paying at the self-service checkout is what one in five Coop customers do today - and one in four Migros customers. However, customers can still choose.

Karin Frick is convinced that there will soon also be cash-free self-service shops in Switzerland. She is head of research at the Gottlieb Duttweiler Institute and closely monitors technological change.

Union demands right to retraining

She expects that such offers will soon also be found in Switzerland. «The technical requirements are already in place. The retailer can lower costs, and shopping becomes more convenient for the customer. "

But what happens to the employees in the retail trade? The number of employees has been falling slowly but steadily for years. Vania Alleva of the Unia trade union fears that many jobs will be lost - if the cashiers become superfluous along with the tills. It therefore demands that companies invest in further training and retraining of their employees. Otherwise, job cuts can be expected.

Most of these cashiers are likely to have trouble finding another job. As long as I can, I'll use the tills that are served. NB: does anyone assume that the savings will be passed on to the customer? Or do I get a discount if I do the billing myself ...

This is what it boils down to, what with a 30-year-old part-time employee ...?, without a professional qualification and two children, and also as a single parent. The case quickly becomes clear where the journey is going.

Great, the big markets are happy, even more customers, even more profits! What about the staff? Do they get something from the profit or do they have to go to the employment office?
Politicians should now finally introduce a computer tax to finance the AHV, ALV, unconditional basic income, and state-financed retraining and not misuse it.
Call for a computer tax and e-commerce tax.

Personnel is a cost factor. Costs have to be continuously reduced, or suddenly you are no longer economically viable. Guess 3x what that means ...!

And rare earths are built into every price tag because there is an NFC tag attached to it and it ends up in the trash. What a waste of resources, how perverse it actually is! And here, too, the following applies: Thinking about an automation tax is urgently required, otherwise our community will soon collapse completely due to a lack of tax revenue and thanks to the growth in social workers. Then it is over with the profits of the rich and beautiful ...
