HOW TO: What is Discord and How Does it Work? - 2021

Discord is a free voice and text chat app that combines the voice chat aspects of services like Skype and Teamspeak with the text chat aspects of Internet Relay Chat (IRC) and various instant messaging services. It is available as a standalone app for Windows, MacOS, Linux, Android and iOS. You can also access the same functionality through a web-based app that runs in browsers such as Chrome and Firefox.

What is discord for?

Discord is billed as chat for gamers as it was launched as a free alternative to voice chat services like TeamSpeak, Mumble, and Ventrilo. These services are all in place to facilitate Voice over IP (VoIP) communication between members of gaming clans, guilds, and other groups. Rather than using the voice communications built into games, which are often of lesser quality, lacking functionality, or lacking entirely, players use these services to communicate both inside and outside the game.

The disadvantage of most VoIP services is that they require a server that is usually not free. There are exceptions, e.g. B. Hosting companies that provide a free VoIP server when renting a regular game server. However, there are usually some costs associated with running a TeamSpeak, Mumble or Ventrilo server.

Discord offers a similar service with similar features and is free. The Discord app can be downloaded for free. Signing up for a Discord account is free. Anyone can create a Discord server for free.

Discord offers a premium service called Discord Nitro. When you pay for this premium service, you get perks like uploading images and the ability to choose the numbers that are otherwise randomly added to your Discord username.

  2. Click or tap Open Discord in your browser.

Discord Web App Vs. Desktop Application

Discord is available as a web app that can be run in most modern browsers. You can also download them for Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, and iOS. The desktop and web versions of Discord are functionally identical in almost every way and even look almost the same.

There are some differences between the browser and desktop versions of Discord, but both are viable options. Here are the main differences:

  • Discord desktop app
    • Push to talk is always activated.
    • Individual reports show better performance.
    • Shows your friends what game you are playing with the option to turn this feature off.
  • Discord Web App
    • Push to talk only works when the browser window is armed.
    • Push to talk is not available during game play.
    • No download required, so you can use it anywhere, on any computer without waiting for files to download and install.

If you use Discord a lot, it's worth downloading the desktop app. The web app is great because it lowers the entry bar.

For example, if you play a game with your friends or clan friends and want to invite an external player to voice chat using a service like TeamSpeak or Mumble, they will need to download and configure the app, create an account and enter your server information. With Discord, all you have to do is click your invite link, enter a temporary username if it doesn't already have one, and you're good to go.

Discord Mobile App

In addition to desktop and web apps, Discord is also available as an app for iOS and Android.

Discord's mobile app looks very similar to the desktop app, but is adapted for smaller screens. While on a server, you can swipe right to see a list of voice and text channels and left to see a list of all members of the server.

Voice chat on the Discord mobile app works the same as the desktop app. So you can use it to communicate with your friends or teammates when you're playing on a console that doesn't support Discord and the computer is too far away.

They all have the same skills to adjust the volume of other users, mute people so you can't hear them at all, and mute and numb yourself when you don't want your friends to hear what's going on in your house. or you have to walk away from the keyboard (AFK) for a while.

You can get the Discord mobile app here:

  • Android - Discord in the Google Play Store.
  • iOS - Discord on the App Store.

How to join a server on Discord

Joining Discord servers is easy, but there is no central list of servers to search through. To join a Discord server, you need a member or an administrator of that server to get a link. Some servers have permanent links, while others only invite you to use one-time links that expire within a day.

If you have a friend with a Discord server that you want to join, ask for an invite. If you're a member of a community that uses Discord, you can ask for an invite, or check the community website, subreddit, forum, wiki, or any other place you think has a permanent link on it.

Another way to find Discord communities is to run a query on your favorite search engine. For example, if you're playing Final Fantasy XIV, look for:

Final Fantasy Xiv Discord Server

  4. click Leave the server.
  5. click Leave the server again to confirm.

How to add friends in case of discord

Discord is more fun with friends, and there are several ways to add them. There is no way to search for friends by email addresses or usernames. Hence, you will either need to use a person's full Day of Discord or be friends with them on another platform before you can add them to Discord.

When you sign up for Discord, you will enter a username. This is only part of your Discord tag. Discord adds four digits in this format in addition to the name you choose:

Username # 1234

If you have your friend's full Discord tag, including numbers, you can send a friend request:

  1. Start discord.
  2. Press the Discord symbol (Main menu) in the upper right corner.
  3. click Add friend.
  4. Enter your friend's full Discord tag and click send a friend request.
  5. Your friend will be displayed in the Pending tab until they accept the request.

Find friends at discord from other services

Discord also allows you to link your Discord account to other accounts such as, Steam, and Reddit. You don't have to link accounts, but this makes it easier for you to find your friends. By linking some accounts like Xbox One, your friends can also see what you are playing on the other platform.

Click to link accounts to Discord Connect accounts on the Add friend Screen. This will give you the option to choose the type of account you want to connect to. You can also choose which connected accounts to show up on your Discord profile.

When you link your accounts, Discord will automatically pull your friends list from the other service and check if any of your friends are registered with Discord. When someone is found, you have the option to send a friend request.

Discord calls and screen sharing

In addition to servers, Discord also supports Direct Messages (DMs) to communicate with friends privately, and Group Direct Messages to communicate with small groups of friends. These are separate from servers so you and your friends don't have to be members of the same server to use this feature.

To create a group DM with your friends for private voice chat, video chat, and even screen sharing:

  1. Start discord.
  2. Press the Discord symbol (Main menu).
  3. click Friends.
  4. Press the New group DM Icon in the upper right corner of the app.
  5. Select friends to be invited to group DM.
  6. click Create group DM.
  7. Click the Start Call icon (phone) or the Start Video Call icon (video camera) to start a voice or video call.
  8. During a voice or video call, click the button Video camera Icon to turn on the webcam, or the Turn on screen sharing (Computer monitor) icon to share your screen.
  9. If you want to share your screen, you can click or click on the name of the game you are currently playing Share screen or window Share another window, app, or your entire desktop.
  10. click Leave the call to end the conversation when you're done.

Up to 10 people can participate in a Discord Group DM at the same time. This is a great way for small groups without creating a separate server. If you want to call more than 10 people at the same time, you need to create and use a voice channel on a Discord server.
